A day of conversations around artistic and academic exchange between the UK and China. Speakers will talk through what makes successful collaborations, looking at how to foster good relationships and create meaningful work together.
There are contributions from the British Council, Arts Council England, Open Eye Gallery, University of Salford Art Collection, Centre for Contemporary Chinese Art and Frieze, as well as presentations by artists working between the UK and China. This seminar aims to be a site for critical and imaginative discussion, as well as a site on which to build connections.
This seminar is free and open to everyone. It is useful for anyone interested in art, academia and international exchange, especially those looking to build platforms for cultural collaboration between the UK and China.
There will also be the opportunity to see Liz Hingley’s newly opened Shanghai Sacred, installed on a bamboo scaffolding structure made by Chen Hang Feng, as part of LOOK Photo Biennial.

Artists, photographers, critical writers and sector networks share their experience and best practices in building relationships between UK and China. 5 – 7 minutes each about building networks of exchange in working between UK & China.
- Yan Wang Preston – Sony World Photo Award-winning Photographer, currently working with Liverpool’s Mandarin-speaking population.
- Liz Hingley – lead artist for LOOK Photo Biennial Chapter One, an anthropologist and photographer working across UK and Shanghai.
- Chen Hang Feng — Artist based in Shanghai, collaborator with Liz Hingley.
- Francesca Girelli — Frieze Content Operations Manager and former Arthub Curator
- Derek Man – Photographer, working with the Cantonese-speaking community in Liverpool’s Chinatown, the oldest in Europe.
- Paul Herrmann — Director of Redeye, the Photographer’s Network.
- Jamie Wyld – Founder of videoclub, a platform for artist’s films.
2-3pm: One-to-ones with all speakers

LOOK Photo Biennial 2019 takes place across Liverpool, The Wirral, the wider North West and in Shanghai. It is delivered by Open Eye Gallery, and funded by Arts Council England, Liverpool City Council and The Foyle Foundation.
