Ffotogallery presents Borderliners, an exhibition featuring two of the most famous Lithuanian photographers Aleksandras Macijauskas (b.1938) and Rimaldas Vikšraitis (b.1954), the winner of the prestigious Discovery Award at Rencontres d’Arles 2009, nominated by Martin Parr.
Vikšraitis acknowledges Macijauskas as his teacher and a formative influence on his artistic career. The social backdrop to both artists’ work is the decline of village life in Lithuania in the years leading up to and following the break-up of the Soviet Union, with the attendant disintegration of the local farming system.
Between 1969 and 1987 Macijauskas created the groundbreaking photographic series Rural Markets, developing a stylistic approach that combined social realism with early avant-garde principles, such as the use of diagonal angles and geometric forms, and close-up views of his subjects for dramatic effect.
An artists' talk will take place on 16 February at noon - booking essential. Email turnerhouse@ffotogallery.org
