Redeye, in collaboration with The Imperial War Museum North (IWMN), brings you a two-day intensive masterclass with Edmund Clark, considered one of the leading contemporary photographers in the UK. This masterclass is timed to coincide with IWMN’s exhibition Catalyst: Contemporary Art and War that features work from Clark’s project Guantanamo: If the Light Goes Out.
About Edmund Clark
Edmund Clark is an award-winning photographer based in the UK. His work traces ideas of shared humanity, otherness and unseen experience through landscape, architecture and the documents, possessions and environments of subjects of political tension.
Recent works Guantanamo: If The Light Goes Out and Control Order House engage with state censorship to explore the hidden experiences and spaces of control and incarceration in the global war on terror.
Edmund has published a number of books, including Guantanamo: If The Light Goes Out and Still Life Killing Time, both by Dewi Lewis Publishing. These have been awarded prizes by the New York Photography Awards, the International Photography Awards/Lucies and the Italian Photography Editors Association. The book Control Order House was recently selected as one of TIME Magazine’s Best Photobooks of 2013. Edmund was awarded the Royal Photographic Society Hood Medal for outstanding photography for public service in 2011, shortlisted for the prestigious Prix Pictet for 2012 for the theme of Power, selected as Editorial Photographer of the Year by the International Photography Awards/Lucies and twice nominated for the Deutsche Börse Prize (2011& 2013).
He has exhibited internationally at galleries such as The Aperture Foundation New York, The Association of Photographers Gallery in London and the Museum auf Abruf, Vienna.
His work appears in collections across the world including The National Portrait Gallery London and The George Eastman House, USA.
Edmund says of this masterclass:
“My idea is based around the concept of forensic aesthetics, which is a theme in my work. This is about the original Latin word forensis, which comes from 'forum' or 'market place'. It concerns the exercise of talking or translating on behalf an object in front of a forum or audience - giving the object a voice. It is an idea put very clearly by Professor Eyal Weizman in his book The Least of all Possible Evils. In discussing the relationship between science and law in the modern understanding of forensic he says:
‘Although science is becoming the most important arbiter on matters of legal concern, forensics is not only about scientific enquiry. It also concerns the rhetoric associated with it - the gestures, narrative, dramatisation - that can be encompassed by the term forensic aesthetics’”.
Masterclass details
This masterclass will give a small group the opportunity to explore Edmund Clark’s work in more detail, looking at the idea of the forensic aesthetic. Participants will be asked to make work, in response to this theme, and then develop their ideas, supported by Edmund.
The masterclass leads with a brief where participants are asked to produce some images before the start of the workshop of objects, environments, spaces, rooms which explore an idea or subject. These can be about any theme or issue, personal or political. The aim is to start participants thinking about how the objects and spaces they choose can communicate to a viewer. Participants need to think about how they photograph or represent these, what they are trying to say and what context they provide.
The first day will commence with an artist’s talk from Edmund, looking at his work and career to date. This is followed in the first afternoon by a development session, where participants will review their briefed work with Edmund and work in small groups to consider innovative ways to look at their subject matter.
Overnight the participants will be asked to produce more work in response to the first day; the Sunday sessions will then commence with an evaluation of this work with Edmund, followed by portfolio reviews in the afternoon.
