The Lowry Galleries

A unique opportunity to explore the long and diverse photographic career of the prestigious Salford born artist, Harold Riley. Beginning with a picture taken with a box camera and ending in present day Salford, via locations around the world. Harold Riley kept every camera he owned and the exhibition includes a selection of those he has used over the decades.

There is also a section devoted to the Salford 80 photography festival, for which Riley played a pivotal role. The exhibition also features work by Andre Kertesz, who is recognized by his unique composition and by his early efforts in the photo essay, and Walker Evans, best known for his photographs of poverty stricken families during the great depression. Their work played a part in influencing and shaping Riley’s photographic ‘eye’.

Riley was friends with LS Lowry for many years and both men shared a mutual interest in capturing the street scenes around their home town. The exhibition includes a series of previously unseen photos Riley took of LS Lowry playing football.
