Murray Ballard: The Prospect of Immortality
Impressions Gallery, Bradford
10th Jun - 17th Sep 2011

'The result of five year’s unprecedented access and international investigation, Murray Ballard offers an amazing photographic insight into the practice of cryonics: the process of freezing a human body after death in the hope that scientific advances may one day bring it back to life. Premiering at Impressions Gallery, this is Murray Ballard’s first major solo show.'

Gina Glover: Playgrounds of War
Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow
11th June - 7th August

'Gina Glover's photographs deal with the monumental and emotional detritus of abandoned military bases, drawing upon Gina's own childhood memories and her personal sense of vulnerability in the face of threatened military force. 'Playgrounds of War' presents the aesthetics of past wars, avoided wars and possible wars.'

Ben Roberts: The Gathering Clouds
Third Floor Gallery, Cardiff
18 June - 24 July 2011
'The Gathering Clouds is a personal account of the property boom and bust. Instead of methodically approaching the subject, Roberts collected his images through exploratory walks through urban fringes, only partially planned with aid of satellite imagery. The result are less literal photographs that guide us through the radical changes experienced by the Spanish society and landscape in the hands of property developers.'

Allan Sekula – Polonia and Other Fables (2007-2009) and Walking on Water (1990/1995)
Belfast Exposed, Belfast
From 8 July to 19 August 2011

'Belfast Exposed is pleased to present two works; Polonia and Other Fables and Walking on Water by acclaimed US photographer Allan Sekula. Both works explore personal themes rooted in the artist’s Polish ancestry, placed amidst wider considerations of national identity, migration and global economics.

The exhibition is made up of a series of large, square-format analogue photographs; a text booklet and wall-mounted quotations, alongside an installation of slide projection. The artist uses a range of photographic tropes, from clandestine snapshots to formal portraiture, from ethnography to street photography, from serial to aerial views in an attempt to understand Poland, the place, and the Poland that lives in the minds of those who have left.'

Memory of a Hope
Ceri Hand Gallery
5 August 2011 to 3 September 2011
'Devised with gallery artist Matthew Houlding, this summer exhibition draws on a key text by Henri Lefebvre and the autobiographical writing of JG Ballard, reflecting spaces caught between construction, destruction and nostalgia.

Each gallery artist was invited to select two artists in response to Houlding’s concept. The resulting exhibition includes 36 artists and over 100 art works, including film, photography, painting, sculpture, text and audio work - much of it seen for the first time in the UK.'
