About

“Photography is story telling and so is wrestling.” Lisa Patricia

Photographer and Redeye member Lisa Patricia invites you into her world of wrestling photography as she hosts an evening that looks at the story of two niche sports told in photographs. Speaking alongside Lisa is Manchester-based professional photographer Richard Goulding who presents his project ‘Because of Judo’.

This is a Redeye member-led event; from a series where members suggest and host events based on their skills or interests. Find out more about suggesting an event here, or sign up for membership here.

Who is it for?
This event is for those interested in sports photography or photojournalism and for anyone keen to learn the art of storytelling through their images.

Lisa Patricia
Lisa Patricia graduated from Liverpool School of Art and Design and combines work as an artist with her freelance photography under the banner of Plentiful Pictures & Photography.

Lisa travels up and down the Country to document wrestling matches by the ringside, capturing aerial techniques, intimate locks, microphone performances, character gimmicks and crowd participation. Lisa’s objective is to create a space for the wrestling community to engage with memories, showcase the performers’ skills and most importantly, to tell the story of their passion. When not observing wrestling, Lisa frequently appears at comic conventions exhibiting her work and is due to retire for the year after her final run at the Liverpool Horror Convention in October this year.  Her appearances at promotions include Wrestle Island, Grand Pro Wrestling, Tetsujin Shoot Style, Empress Pro Wrestling, Attack! Pro Wrestling and many others which can all be seen here.

Richard Goulding
Richard Goulding is a commercial photographer based in Manchester, UK. His personal work focuses on the world of combat sports. Because of Judo is a study of a life in judo and is available in an art monograph limited edition book. It is the culmination of a six-year photographic project and is a tribute to the late Akinori Hosaka.

Before he died Hosaka said,  “I am not a wealthy man, but because of judo in my heart I am a millionaire”.

This quote led the photographer to look deep into judo and to find a beauty in a sport that has origins in a brutal battlefield fighting system. The visual story unfolds as the British judo squad prepares for the London 2012 Olympics. The project is underpinned by portraits of the players taken after they have stepped off the mat between randori (fight practice sessions). The publishing of the book has been partly funded by a crowdfunding campaign, which saw support from backers all over the world.
