Didsbury Arts Festival will take place Saturday, 25 September to Saturday, 2 October, 2010.
Local artists, organisations and people all over Didsbury are invited to support this exciting
community event the aim of which is to celebrate the wealth of talent, diversity and vibrant
community that make Didsbury so special. A varied and stimulating festival programme is
planned to represent a huge range of arts from music, theatre and comedy to visual arts, crafts
and writing.
The festival team would like to hear from all Photographers, whether amateur or professional,
who may want to exhibit their work. You are invited to complete the ‘Artists Form’ from www.didsburyartsfestival.org in full and to send it to the team by no later than 31 May 2010.
‘The Open Interpretation of the Portrait’ – competition theme
Photographers (amateur or professional) are invited to enter the festival photography
competition. To enter you should submit a photograph with your interpretation of the portrait.
The Rules
1. Only one entry per person.
2. Send competition entries by jpegs 72dpi suitable for screen or digital projection to Phil
Portus at info@philportus.co.uk
3. Please provide your name, age, address, email contact and daytime telephone number
when submitting the image and state ‘Didsbury Arts Festival Photo Competition’ in the
subject field of the email.
4. Entries should be received by the judges by no later than 1 August 2010.
The Judging
The judging will be undertaken by:-
Len Grant Len Grant is a photographer and writer best known for documenting Manchester
and Salford’s urban regeneration from iconic building projects to neighbourhood renewal.
Through words and pictures his exhibitions and books sensitively portray the lives of those
affected by change.
Penny Skerrett Penny Skerrett is a freelance artist and curator. She formerly worked at the
National Media Museum curating large-scale and critically-acclaimed photographic exhibitions.
Her exhibitions included internationally-renowned photographers such as Martin Parr, Joel
Sternfeld and Julian Germain.
The Prizes
• First prize – [to be confirmed]
• Second prize –an A3, signed, limited edition print of the Ramones, 1977, donated by
Photographer, Howard Barlow. See www.howardbarlow.com
• Third prize – a £25 book token donated by the South Manchester Camera Club
The 3 winning photographers and next 10 runners up will be contacted by Monday, 7
September. The winners and runners up should ensure they are in a position to frame their
image and deliver it (framed) to Phil Portus at the Didsbury Life offices Burton Road by no later
than 5pm on Monday 20 September 2010 for hanging as part of the festival exhibition.
Note: Framed images should be no more than A1 (594mm × 841mm).
The Festival Exhibition
The photographs taken by the winners and runners up will form an exhibition at a Festival
Venue for the duration of the festival. The venue will be confirmed nearer the time.
The exhibition preview night will be Friday, 24 September, 2010. See programme for details.
