Nostalgia ain’t what it used to be, but there’s always a market for those who like to wallow in it, as the large crowd attending this latest exhibition of artefacts surrounding the Factory production line indicates.
Granted that the exhibition may have a limited appeal to those not caught up in the Manchester/Spike Island commotion, but the magnetism of the truth and fables that surround Factory has brought in people who aren’t old enough to remember the early days, along with their offspring.
There is not a single bass guitar in sight and the only guitar is the yellow and black decorated one that is a part of the exhibition, the but the instrumental versions of Joy division songs being delivered by LITMUS using 3 violins and a double bass, are refreshing interpretations, respectfully delivered.
The artifacts includes hand drawn charts that describe the people, the bands and the cultural influences that have emanated from the heart of Manchester, many of which are seemingly as valid today as ever, a point illustrated by local poet Mike McGarry.
Mike has been performing regularly around the venues of Manchester, and is a totally confident performer as demonstrated by him relinquishing the microphone to gather people closer so that he can deliver a more intimate event. His showpiece work is titled “Manchester Manâ€, a cuttingly accurate, yet at times hilarious, observation of all things Mancunian
The iconic yellow and black stripes are heavily visible throughout the display, even appearing on the taxi outside. There are many others items such as posters, tee shirts etc. that touch upon the creativity that inspired many. Even Bernard Manning gets a mention.
