“Liz Hingley’s photography captures brilliantly both the complexity and emptiness of homelessness. They demonstrate not only her most exceptional capacities with a camera, but her deep understanding and respect for her subjects.â€
- Jon Snow, Channel 4 newsreader and broadcaster
Liz Hingley is a British renowned photographer known for her intimate approach of documenting personal journeys. She produced the photographs 'With Others' whilst living in and working alongside Emmaus community members in France, Germany, Belgium, Bosnia, Holland and Italy. Emmaus offers an alternative way of life for the socially excluded.
Her first contact with the subject matter came whilst studying photography at the University of Brighton, when she began working in a hostel for the homeless. The experience of night shifts monitoring the hostel dormitory and chatting to homeless men over breakfast began to open a dialogue and an understanding for the issues and concerns facing those on the fringes of society.
In the exhibition in Village Underground (North East London) the photographs will be featured alongside sound and furniture installations and fashion designs by contributing artists.
