It’s hard to believe it’s been 20 years, but it has! For our anniversary we will be marking this landmark year by inviting three photographers who spoke at Redeye’s first public lectures to return. It’s a chance to reflect on their photographic careers in parallel to Redeye’s lifespan.
Each in turn invites another photographer to speak – someone they admire, have worked with in the past, or are mentoring. Both photographers will have a chance to speak individually and together, to paint a picture of their inspirations, career and work.
WHO IS IT FOR?
The third and final session in the series sees Paul Hill invite David Grinly. This event is for anyone who is interested in their work, or in photography generally. Early booking recommended.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS…
Paul Hill was a newspaper reporter and climbing instructor before becoming a freelance photographer in 1965. He photographed regularly for The Guardian and The Observer and became director of the Creative Photography course at Trent Polytechnic, Nottingham in 1976 – the forerunner to all current student-centred higher education courses in the medium. Another notable achievement around this time was the establishment of The Photographers’ Place alongside his wife, Angela. It was the UK‘s first residential photography workshop, and was run out of their Peak District home. Paul continues to run workshops around the world, usually with his partner, Maria Falconer.
He wrote Approaching Photography and Dialogue with Photography and has had two monographs White Peak Dark Peak (1990) and Corridor of Uncertainty (2010) published. Exhibiting regularly since 1970 in Britain and internationally, Paul was the first art photographer to receive an MBE for services to photography and the first professor of photographic practice in a British university.

David Grinly is a visual artist based in Edinburgh, his practice focusses on the concept of the photographic. His most recent work was made following a period of funded research in Italy in early 2019, where he spent six months researching the notion of photography as a site of belief. David currently works as Research Associate at Stills, Edinburgh, where he has worked for fifteen years in various roles including tutor, lecturer and curator. He also lectures in Critical Studies for Robert Gordon University at Edinburgh College. Despite working for two of Edinburghs most established photography institutions David is interested in alternative platforms to sharing his work; self publishing fiction and non-fiction work, gifting artwork and principally exhibiting online. He has also shown in various group and solo shows in Scotland and the UK and published a book ALVA in 2013.
David worked for ten years as a professional photographer, concentrating on portraiture and architecture, with national and international clients and magazines. He graduated in Time Based Art from Duncan of Jordanstone in Dundee in 2004.
