The event
The third in a new series of events to connect and support the photographic community in and around Sheffield. The sessions are presented by Redeye members Karina Lax and Jeremy Abrahams. This event features the work of Arpita Shah and the late Martin Jenkinson, and also includes time for discussion and networking.
About the speakers
Arpita Shah is a photographic artist and educator based in Edinburgh, Scotland. She works between photography and film, exploring the fields where culture and identity meet. As an India-born artist, Shah spent an earlier part of her life living between India, Ireland and the Middle East before settling in the UK. This migratory experience is reflected in her practice, which focuses on the notion of home, belonging and shifting cultural identities.
Arpita's work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Detroit Center of Contemporary Photography (2013); Tramway in Glasgow (2014); Focus Festival in Mumbai, India (2015); Chobi Mela IX in Dhaka, Bangladesh (2017); and Autograph APB in London (2018).
Her major solo exhibition ‘Nalini’ funded through the support of Creative Scotland is going to be premiered at Street Level Photoworks, Glasgow in February 2019. She is the recipient of the 2019 Light Work + Autograph ABP Artist-in-Residence programme which she will undertake in New York in September this year.
Shah is also co-founder of Focàs Scotland, an initiative that supports local and international emerging photographers.
Our second session celebrates the work and life of the late Martin Jenkinson, whose photography is exhibited at Weston Park, Sheffield, until 14th April 2019. Martin took up photography professionally after he was made redundant as a steelworker in 1979. He soon found himself at the centre of change in British industry - strikes, job losses, poverty and redevelopment - particularly being based in the home town of the National Union of Mineworkers during the strike of 1984-5.
Martin built up a detailed and intimate photographic portrait of Yorkshire, reflecting his radical politics and sense of social justice, until his death in 2012. We are delighted to be joined by his daughter Justine Jenkinson, and to welcome some of his friends and colleagues, in particular Mark Harvey, who will introduce Jenkinson’s work.

These sessions are open to anyone interested in photography, and for photographers at any stage of their career, looking to share knowledge, advice and network with others to support their practice.

Please meet in the main reception / atrium area - ground floor of the Cantor Building on Arundel Street, S1 ( the building on the corner as it crosses Furnival Street)
From the atrium you will be guided by Redeye Volunteers to the room.
