At this month's critique we are pleased to welcome guest reviewer Camilla Brown, an educator, writer and curator, in addition to Redeye's Director Paul Herrmann. To make the most of her expertise as a writer and lecturer Camilla is offering a Critique Surgery looking specifically at revising your artist statement. Artist statements are a key part of communicating about your work, especially if applying for competitions, festivals and funding. This is an opportunity to take a look at your statement and revise it with Camilla’s guidance.
Paul Herrmann gives advice on career development for photographer. You might be using this time to plan for the future, Paul can advise on long time career development. If you have seen most of your work drop off due to the COVID-19 pandemic he can advise on rethinking your business model, and direct you towards some of the support that is available.

Camilla Brown is a curator, writer and educator on contemporary art, specialising in photography based in the Derbyshire. For ten years she was Senior curator at The Photographers’ Gallery, London previously she was Exhibitions Curator at Tate Liverpool. She works at both the University of Derby, where she teaches on the MA photography and film and at Middlesex University as Senior Lecturer Creative Industries. Her writing on contemporary photography is regularly published in books and magazines. For the past 2 years she has been Associate Curator at Grain Photography Hub. She is on the steering group for the Format Photography Festival.
Paul Herrmann is an organiser and leader in photography. He is director of Redeye and of The Photographic Collections Network, an equivalent to Redeye for photography specialists, archivists, scholars and historians. He has started and steered a range of projects, and brought people together, in photography and the arts. His background is as an editorial photographer working with not-for-profit organisations for three decades. He talks, writes and advises on a range of business and professional issues in photography.

When
We have slots with Paul Herrmann between 4:30 – 5:30pm and slots with Camilla Brown between 6 – 7pm on Monday the 27th and Tuesday 28th. Please choose your preferred thirty-minute slot at the time of booking. We recommend you arrive 5 minutes before your designated slot to ensure that the tech is all working.
Where
Online! Critique Surgeries sell out quickly so please book as soon as possible to secure your place. We will then be in touch with everyone who has registered with the meeting code and password. You will need an internet connection and a computer, smartphone or tablet. This event will take place over Zoom, you don't need an account to join in.
Tickets
The Critique Surgeries are always free for members and we are offering the Virtual Critique Surgeries free to everyone, although limited to one free slot per person. Space is limited so please book onto a specific thirty-minute time slot. If you are unable to attend your appointment please let Rachael Burns know as soon as possible. The Critique Surgeries are a regular feature of our events programme, with surgeries every few months. Hosting them online gives us the opportunity to reach reviewers who are located based outside the region or even internationally. The Critique Surgeries are designed to be informal sessions for photographers who are looking for feedback and advice. Maybe you are struggling for inspiration, have hit a dead end with your latest project or you simply want advice on where, or who, to show your work to. Please look at the reviewers bios carefully to see who it would be best for you to speak to. These sessions are designed as a friendly alternative to portfolio reviews and can be used to prepare your portfolio for an upcoming review or competition.
