Gawaine Meechan - an appreciation

We were very sad to learn of the death of Gawaine Meechan, a talented and energetic photographer who had been actively involved with Redeye over the last year.

Gawaine was born in London in 1978 and started his photographic career as a ground photographer for the RAF. Looking to broaden his photographic outlook he obtained a first class degree in photography from the University of Cumbria in 2011, before successfully applying to be on Redeye's Lightbox course of 2012-13. He lived in Carlisle with his partner Louise Hill.

Redeye launches three new member benefits!

Redeye is pleased to announce that from the new academic year more emphasis will be placed on their members’ work on the website.

Since the launch of the Redeye membership last year the scheme has grown successfully and curators, buyers and directors throughout the UK and abroad look at and comment on the portfolio pages. In order to support emerging as well as established photographers even more, Redeye will have three new features on their website:

• a weekly changing home page image chosen from the members’ portfolios

Government Inquiry into Future of National Media Museum

The UK Government's culture department, the DCMS, has announced an urgent inquiry into the future of the Science Museum Group, which includes the National Media Museum in Bradford, one of the key photography museums in the country. The DCMS is inviting submissions by 27 June 2013.

This follows comments from the group director, Ian Blatchford, who said that one of the group's museums, also including the Science Museum in London, The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester and the National Railway Museum in York, might have to be closed as a result of funding cuts.

Belfast Photo Festival launches 6 June

Belfast Photo Festival, Northern Ireland’s premier visual arts festival, runs from 6 June to 30 June 2013, under the theme 'Spectacle'. The importance of photography in Northern Ireland's visual culture and history is something the festival aims to promote while also embracing and showcasing the nation's current and upcoming photographic talent both at home and abroad through seeking out new and emerging talent.
